The Brothers Cazimero: The Warmth of Aloha in Winter
Morihiko Nakahara, conductor
A Hawaiian Culture Demonstration begins in the lobby at 6:00pm
The Brothers Cazimero are consummate performers who have made their indelible imprint on the face of contemporary Hawaiian music. Their talent, longevity and sales success have placed them in a league of their own, untouched by any other performer in the history of Hawaiian music.
Their musical talent, incredible showmanship and infectious humor have bridged cultural gaps that naturally exist with ethnic music and dance. The Brothers Cazimero achieve a full-bodied sound that emanates from two traditional instruments, the acoustic bass and a twelve-string guitar. The men of Halau Na Kamalei and the ladies of the Royal Dance company have always accompanied Robert and Roland on stage telling intricate stories with the hula. Thirty years of successful concerts is an indication of their exceptional fan base and wide appeal.
The Grammy-nominated duo was inducted into the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame in 2006 and 2007, joining the ranks of Hawaiian music legends. In 2008, The Brothers Cazimero were recognized by their peers and received lifetime achievement awards from the Hawai‘i Academy of Recording Arts. |

Delight in this concert of music by four great Russian composers as guest conductor Danail Rachev and the Spokane Symphony bring three tales of princes, princesses, witches and fairies to life. You’ll be enchanted by Tchaikovsky’s portrayal of the most beloved fable of all times. When princess Aurora falls victim of Carabosse’s evil spells, she is saved by the Lilac Fairy, who softens the curse. But tricked by the wicked fairy on her 16th birthday, Aurora pricks her finger in a spindle and falls into deep sleep for 100 years, waiting for her true love’s kiss. You’ll fall in love again with this masterpiece.

Ottorino Respighi / Ancient Airs and Dances Suite No. 3
Jean Sibelius / Symphony No. 7
Sergei Rachmaninoff / Symphony No. 1
Thought lost for almost five decades, Rachmaninoff’s First Symphony is the work of a 22 year-old genius. In its four movements, you’ll hear the ravishing sound that would later become the composer’s trademark. The work is unified by a single musical idea, which threads the piece from beginning to end.
In contrast to the work of a young Rachmaninoff, Sibelius’ last symphony, the Seventh, is only about 20 minutes long. You’ll be awestruck by the composer’s ability to create this skillfully unified world of emotions in the span of a single-movement. From mysterious to luminous, and from playful to triumphant, you’ll relish this gem of creativity and craftsmanship. DETAILS |
